Rodeo Queen Fashion: A Retro Resurgence

From pin stripes to paisley and classic denim to eye-catching Aztec, rodeo queening and western fashion’s resurgence of heart-racing retro is sure to thrill.

Retro western clothing began making its come back as early as 2010, but thanks to Miss Rodeo America, it is solidifying its place in rodeo queen fashion.

Wrangler, Cowgirl Tuff Company, and Cinch are just a few western clothing brands bringing back retro western prints, jeans, and styles. As these are prime rodeo sponsors, it's only natural that the trend would find its way to the rodeo queen industry.

Whether you already have a closet full of fancy retro or your looking to update yours with the latest trend, there are a few things you can do to truly claim the retro rodeo style as your own.

Keep it Simple

While the retro trends boast many bright and colorful patterns, it also brings a certain simplicity.

If simple and classy is more your style, the best of the retro trend for you is likely pinstripe patterns and classic denim.

Dress these retro prints up with a touch of torquoise, flashy earrings, or a western wild rag scarf. There are a variety of ways to add a flare to simpler retro style.

Go Bold

The retro style is all about flashy.

With bright colors and busy prints, there is a great variety of options for you if your style is more bold.

Keep in mind that while rodeo queens are flashy, there is a difference between eye catching and messy. Make sure your prints don't clash with your sash, crown, belt, or boots.

You should also be cautious about over dressing this style. With a bold print or color use more moderate or simple jewelry and avoid any textured or patterned wild rags that would clash with the print or color.

Jeans Things?

Retro style jeans can be as fun as the shirts with bellbottoms, wild prints, and classic retro.

As a rodeo queen it can be fun to experiment with these styles and if you are ever in a contest with a "fashion forward" competition section I highly encourage you to experiment.

However; If you are in a horsemanship contest or at any appearance where you will be riding a horse, I would caution against any of these fashion trends.

Starched bootcut Wranglers, especially colored Wranglers, are traditional for rodeo queens in the arena and these trends can detract from the expected rodeo queen image you are trying to represent.

Retro IS for Rodeo Queens

Rodeo queens are the faces of not only rodeo but the western lifestyle.

With this in mind it is vital that any current or hopeful rodeo queen keep unto date on current trends and find a way to incorporate them into her style.

Just remember the tradition you represent as a rodeo queen and keep your image flashy and classy.
